To raise awareness of the need to recycle old refrigerators, these decorated items will be on display in the Museum’s Great Hall, and attendees can vote for their favorite piece. Submitted by a wide array of individuals and groups, ranging from employee teams to professional artists, many of the fridges will incorporate environmental themes and recycled art materials.

Elena del Rivero: Home Suite

Now – Sunday, November 16

As part of an ongoing series, Elena del Rivero presents two installations at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Composed mostly of paper, the pieces are meant to explore the passage of time and the ways in which our daily lives, and the events in them, shape our sense of a home.

During the course of one year, del Rivero placed large reams of handmade paper throughout her lower Manhattan loft and work space – then, went about living her life. In that year, the paper was walked on, eaten on, stained, ripped, cleaned, and mended to produce del Rivero’s first installation, [Swi:t] Home, 2000 – 2001.

The second was created out of a more unexpected and tragic force. On September 11, 2001, del Rivero walked into her loft to find the windows blown in and all of her work torn and covered in ash. She spent the next five years piecing together what she could salvage, and now presents the finished installation, a curtain of sewn paper more than 500 feet long, called [Swi:t] Home, A Chant, 2001 – 2006.
